Mentorship in University Teaching

Through participation in the Mentorship in University Teaching (MiUT), doctoral students gain experience in course design and delivery in a supervised setting.  Participants in the MiUT program receive a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) assignment to an eligible course (and willing faculty instructor/mentor), where the GTA will have input in course planning and the opportunity to deliver 25-33% of the lectures. Doctoral students who successfully complete the program will receive instructor-specific course evaluations and, on request, a letter evaluating their teaching from their faculty mentor to include in their teaching dossier.

To be eligible for an MiUT assignment, you must be eligible to receive GTA funding.  In addition, you must be in your 3rd year or higher and have completed your coursework requirements.  It is recommended but not required that you have satisfied the logic competency requirement and passed your comprehensive examination.

Those who express interest in the program will be contacted at a later date with a list of the courses for which instructors have indicated their willingness to serve as mentors. We are currently compiling this list. You will be asked to provide us with course preferences from this list.

The procedure for course assignments is competitive, and there may be fewer positions than there are applicants.  Consideration will be given to background in assessing the suitability of the student for a course and preference will be given to students who have not already participated. In addition, because we expect high demand on the part of students, preference will be given to those who are up-to-date in their progression through the program.
